Some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) were said to have escaped death during a reported face-off with security operatives who were said to have staged a crack down on members of the group.
The incident was said to have occurred on February 21,2022 when, one of the members of the IPOB, one Amadi Channel Sagy believed to be a second in command in the group in the area, stormed Okasi Ukwoako Community in the restive Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
He was allegedly wearing black and yellow, red stripe indicating IPOB insignia. It was not clear as at press time why the security operatives staged the reported crack down.
It was however gathered that the security operatives may have staged the crack down due to rising activities of the IPOB separatist group, in line with the governments decision to end the group’s agitation in Nigeria.
It was further gathered that lives and property were lost in the reported crackdown as residents of the Community scampered for safety, with many believed to have fled the community for the sake of their lives.
Unconfirmed report had it that Sagy’s whereabouts including those of some other members of the separatist IPOB, remained yet unknown. Although speculations are rife that he may have fled the town for his life. Their homes were equally believed to have been ransacked by security.
Palpable fear, tension and anxiety are believed to have engulfed the entire community at the moment. This is even as many residents are said to be taking refuge in other nearby communities and states, in order to save their dear lives.
It will be recalled that IPOB, a separatist group that has been championing the course of re-establishing the defunct state of Biafra, has for some years now, been at loggerheads with the government of Nigeria which is said to have launched a heavy crackdown on the group’s activities in Southeast of the country.
The said incident is one of several cases of crackdown on IPOB group by the security operatives, which in most cases, turnout to be terrific with lives and property usually lost.
Recall also that the situation in that part of Nigeria may have prompted the United Kingdom government’s reported move to grant asylum to “persecuted” members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government,…”
The Leader of the IPOB,Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been arrested and detained by Nigerian government for the past two years now.He is being prosecuted for treasonable felony which he has since denied.
